The money raised will be directed towards research here in Aotearoa, New Zealand and overseas. Initially funds will support the Cure Mito Foundation, a reputable organisation in the United States that is at the forefront of gene therapy and drug repurposing research for ECHS1 deficiency. This collaboration will ensure that New Zealand patients benefit from cutting-edge research and potential treatments being developed globally.

There has been a recent study on ECHS1D in Aotearoa that has identified a prevalence of this disease in our Māori and Pacific populations.
